According to the United Nations, global carbon emissions need to be reduced by 45% by 2030 in order to limit global warming to below 1.5℃, compared to pre-industrial levels. The Sustainable Development Goals was established by the United Nations as an urgent call for action to achieve a better, more sustainable future for all. BillionBricks’ solutions directly impact four of seventeen SDGs by addressing the climate and housing affordability challenges.
The need for a radical approach
According to the UN, the housing need is worsening with over 1.8 billion people living in need of adequate housing today. By 2030, more than 3 billion people will need access to affordable and adequate housing around the world. This translates into a demand for 96,000 new affordable and accessible housing units every day. Buildings and construction sectors combined are responsible for over one-third of global energy consumption and nearly 40% of total direct and indirect CO2 emissions.
By integrating design, technology and commerce, we have created a new framework for sustainable living – a triple bottom line solution that tackles systemic issues of housing, energy access and climate change.
Which SDGs do the BillionBricks Net-Zero Housing Solutions impact?
BillionBricks’ net-zero housing solutions directly impact four SDGs through its contribution to renewable energy from solar homes/communities that innovate across the value chain of the real estate industry. The carbon neutrality of our homes significantly reduces the environmental impact of the construction industry. BillionBricks also fosters inclusion through housing affordability, and where homeowners get access to financing and experience active community management.
#7 Affordable and Clean Energy – BillionBricks provides renewable energy through integrated solar roofing in its net-zero housing solutions.
#9 Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure – BillionBricks innovates in different aspects of the industry value chain through technologies to achieve affordability and sustainability.
#11 Sustainable Cities and Communities – BillionBricks’ communities foster inclusion through active community management beyond the initial construction phase and over 25 years.
#13 Climate Action – With focus on clean energy and carbon neutrality, BillionBricks aims to mitigate the construction industry’s impact on the environment.
The potential impact at scale
The world lacks 200 million homes to date. If all new homes were to be built as net-zero, we could reduce global carbon emissions by 3.4% and save 1.2 billion tons of emissions per annum and contribute to the United Nations/Global Community’s climate goals.
To date, BillionBricks has a pipeline of 10,000 homes across the Philippines and India that will generate 100 MW of renewable energy and offset 3.4 Mt of CO2. Our long term vision is to impact 500,000 lives through housing innovation this decade.
